Jorge Alberto Gracida Valencia, a 21-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Monday, April 8, in the 900 block of South Saint Andrews Place in Koreatown, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 10:15 p.m., officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Olympic Division responded to a call of a shooting and found Gracida Valencia with gunshot wounds, according to an LAPD news release.

Gracida Valencia was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:23 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Gracida Valencia was with two friends when a person walked up to the three, police said.

The person challenged one of the men to a fight, pulled out a gun and an altercation occurred. Gracida Valencia tried to disarm the gunman, but was shot, police said.

Police said the gunman is about 25 years old and was wearing dark clothing. He ran south on South Saint Andrews Place.

Jorge was a good son and hardworker. We met in middle school at John Burroughs. Lovely kid. Always minding his business. Being a leader and responsible. We went to different high schools but that didn't stop our friendship there. He got a part- time job at the community market on Manhattan Pl. & 3rd St. I'd always pass by after visiting my friend who lived in the area for snacks or groceries. Always happening to see him. After graduating Fairfax High School, he started working in Citywalk. Last time i seen him was last year before my pregnancy. We went to a punk show. It was a fun night. A forever remembered night. A week before his death we spoke about attending a show and hanging out since i recently moved to my own place. Forever will be remembered. Everyone got along with Jorge, and Jorge got along with everyone. What he did was a brave move on the shooter. I really hope his friends come down and describe the suspect. He deserves it. Rest in peace my friend. A true warrior. You only did 21 full orbits around the sun but you did great orbits. You'll be missed. You were loved and will be loved.
