A story for every victim

Jose Argueta, 40 [Update]

Jose Argueta, a 40-year-old Latino, died Wednesday, April 25, twenty three years after he was shot near Griffin Avenue and Baldwin Street in Lincoln Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office, said Argueta sustained a gunshot wound to the neck in 1989 and became a quadriplegic.

The victim died from complications from the gunshot wound at his home in Los Angeles, Winter said.

[Updated May 3: LAPD Hollenbeck Det. Carey Ricard said Argueta was injured in a gang-related shooting when he was a teenager. Another person was also shot, but died a day after the incident.

The shooter was apprehended and convicted on one count of murder and another count of attempted murder. He was sentenced to 27 years to life in state prison where he currently remains, Ricard said.

Since Argueta died from a bladder infection, it's still unknown if authorities will charge the incarcerated shooter with his death as well, Ricard said.]

Anyone with information about the shooting or death is asked to contact the Los Angeles Police Department at (877) 527-3247. Tipsters wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
