A story for every victim

Jose Castillo, 20 [Updated]

Jose Castillo, a 20-year-old Latino, died from multiple gunshot and stab wounds Monday, March 29, in the 2600 block of Sichel Street in Lincoln Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Castillo was found fatally wounded at the location after Los Angeles police officers from the Hollenbeck Division responded to reports of shots being fired about 8:40 p.m., according to an LAPD news release. Paramedics from the Los Angeles City Fire Department pronounced him dead at the scene.

Hollenbeck Homicide Detectives’ preliminary investigation suggests Castillo was spray painting gang graffiti in rival gang turf when he had an encounter with rival gang members.

A 40-year-old man who was walking by at the time of the shooting was also hit and suffered a gunshot wound to his upper torso. Paramedics took him to a hospital for medical treatment where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

[Update May 18: A reader contacted the Homicide Report to say Castillo was found with an AK-47, information confirmed by Det. Victor Marin, who is handling the investigation.

Marin also said the bystander hit by gunfire was treated for his injuries and released from the hospital.

Investigators are following several leads in the shooting, and Marin said he believes they will make an arrest in connection with Castillo’s killing.]

Anyone who may have information regarding this shooting is asked to call Hollenbeck Homicide Det. Marin or Joe Ramirez at (323) 342-8969. Tipsters who wish to remain anonymous can call Crimestoppers at (800) 222-8477.
