A story for every victim

Jose Antonio Chavez Jr., 35

Jose Chavez Jr., a 35-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Wednesday, June 27, near Bellevue and Belmont avenues in Echo Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Officers responded to a call regarding gunshots fired about 11:20 a.m., said LAPD Rampart homicide Det. C. Linscomb, who is handling the case.

When authorities arrived, they discovered Chavez shot on a stairway. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Linscomb said. Coroner's records show he suffered several gunshot wounds to his body.

Two days after the shooting, police made arrests in connection with Chavez's death.

Armando Rosales, a 19-year-old Latino, was apprehended and charged with first degree murder. He is currently being held in lieu of $2 million bail at the North County Correctional Facility in Castaic. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 16.

Authorities made a second arrest, but cannot provide details about the alleged assailant because, "He is a juvenile. He's 14-years-old," Linscomb said. It's unknown if he will be charged as an adult.

Although a motive for the shooting is unclear, investigators believe some gang activity may be involved.

Anyone with additional information about the killing is asked to contact Det. Linscomb at (213) 484-3642. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
