A story for every victim

Jose Eduardo Ornelas, 41

Jose Eduardo Ornelas, a 41-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Tuesday, July 18, in the 14800 block of South Spring Street in West Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Ornelas was shot in an industrial area where many motor homes are parked, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Cotter said. “For lack of a better term, it looks like a homeless encampment,” he said.

Ornelas had parked a motor home on the street in the days before his shooting, Cotter said. Around 2:25 a.m., he was standing in the street talking to a woman in a vehicle when a white SUV pulled up beside them, Cotter said.

“A male got out of the driver’s seat, yelled something at both of them, and then he started shooting,” Cotter said.

Both the woman and Ornelas were struck by gunfire and taken to a hospital, Cotter said.

Ornelas was pronounced dead at 2:59 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

The woman was struck in the hip and was in stable condition. She is expected to survive her injuries, Cotter said.

Investigators think the woman also lived on the street, but they don’t know what, if any, relationship she had with Ornelas. They also are trying to find Ornelas’ motor home, Cotter said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
