Teen convicted of murder in mistaken identity case

A 19-year-old man was found guilty of murder in the killing of a woman he thought had been in a fight with his mother, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Jose Alberto Perez was convicted Aug. 18 of one count of second-degree murder for killing Yesenia DeLeon, 35, and another count of assault with a deadly weapon.

On March, 18, 2015, Perez took a shotgun to his stepfather’s house in South Park. He went inside to wait for Deleon’s sister.

At about 7 p.m., it was Deleon, not her sister, who arrived at the home. She was shot in the face, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

After the shooting, Perez went outside and fired another round. He was arrested soon after by LAPD officers.

Perez faces a sentence of 40 years to life in state prison when he returns to court March 17, 2017.
