A story for every victim

Joseph Jenkins, 36 [Updated]

Joseph Jenkins, a 36-year-old white man, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 15 years after he was shot in the 10000 block of Artesia Boulevard in Bellflower, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Jenkins became a paraplegic as a result of a 1995 shooting, said Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner's office. Because his death could potentially have been caused by those injuries, it was listed by the coroner as a homicide A final determination has been deferred pending additional tests that will take six to eight weeks, officials said.

Jenkins had been taken to Lakewood Regional Medical Center on July 29 and remained there until his death on Aug. 17.

[Update Feb. 28, 2011: Coroner's officials said Jenkins died as a result of his spinal  injury due to a gunshot and his death was ruled a homicide.]
