Joseph Waary, 18

Joseph Waary, an 18-year-old Middle Eastern man, was shot and killed Friday, Jan. 24, in the 9800 block of De Soto Avenue in Chatsworth, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s records.

About 11:26 a.m., Waary was inside a business with others when he was shot, said Los Angeles Police Det. Steve Castro. The people Waary was with “freaked out” and took him to a  hospital, Castro said. 

Coroner’s records show the business where Waary was shot was a marijuana dispensary. 

Waary was pronounced dead at 11:30 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

The suspect was identified as Jeffrey Ivan Bustamante Jr., a 19-year-old Latino, police said. 

Bustamante has been charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of possession of a firearm with a prior misdemeanor conviction, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

The charges include an allegation that Bustamante used a semiautomatic handgun, prosecutors said.

Bustamante pleaded not guilty and is due back in court March 4, according to court records.
