Juan Ramirez-Mendez, a 35-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Saturday, Feb. 26, in the 8900 block of Painter Avenue in Whittier, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
[Note: An earlier version of this post, based on preliminary information from the coroner's office, listed the victim as Juan Mendez. Also at the time, the coroner's office did not have an incident address.]
Coroner's officials said Ramirez-Mendez was shot several times at a residence and was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Whittier Daily News, the incident happened at 8:45 p.m. at an apartment complex.
Authorities responded to a call regarding a shooting and found Ramirez-Mendez lying in a courtyard.
Police said the shooter was last seen fleeing the area on foot. He was described only as a Latino.
At the time of the shooting, the victim's two young children were in their apartment, yet were unharmed. Officials said the mother was at work during the killing.
