Julia Culp Myers, 89

Julia Culp Myers, a 89-year-old white woman, was fatally beaten Wednesday, Feb. 21, in the 7000 block of Hawthorn Avenue in Hollywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 12:30 p.m., Myers was physically attacked by a visitor in an apartment she lived in with others, said Los Angeles police Det. Dave Vinton.

Myers was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:52 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Myers was an in-home caretaker and the suspect, Jerrod Vaile-Martindale, a 29-year-old Latino, was visiting his father, Vinton said.

The two got into an argument, and Vaile-Martindale “used his feet” to assault Myers, Vinton said.

Vaile-Martindale has been charged with one count of murder and one count of elder or dependent care abuse resulting in death, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

The charges include an allegation that a deadly and dangerous weapon — his shoes and feet —were used in the killing.
