Julian Fidel Chavez, a 26-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Thursday, Oct. 15, in the 14800 block of Dartmoor Avenue in Norwalk, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 9:15 p.m., neighbors heard an argument, then the sound of gunshots, said Lt. Holly Francisco with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies responded and found Chavez and another man suffering from gunshot wounds. It’s unclear what the initial argument was over, Francisco said. Deputies believed an assailant fled on foot.

Both of the men were taken to a hospital. Chavez was pronounced dead at 10:05 p.m., according to coroner’s records. The other man is expected to survive.

The next morning, Raul Herrera Jr., a 23-year-old Latino, turned himself in at the Norwalk Sheriff’s Station, Francisco said.

Herrera has been charged with one count of murder, one count of attempted murder and one count of mayhem, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.
