Julio Manuel Alcantar, a 23-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Monday, Oct. 1, in the 1000 block of West 66th Street in Vermont-Slauson, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

The 911 emergency system received calls regarding a shooting late Monday evening, said LAPD Criminal Gang and Homicide Det. Valento, who is handling the case.

When authorities arrived, they discovered three victims, including Alcantar, coroner's officials said. All three were taken to a hospital, where Alcantar was later pronounced dead.

Det. Valento said the other two victims were Alcantar’s brother and a longtime friend. They are expected to survive their injuries.

The incident is being investigated as a walk-up shooting, Valento said. The assailant was described as a male, possibly black.

It's believed the shooting was gang-related.

Anyone with information about the killing or the identity of the shooter is asked to contact Det. Valento or Garza at (213) 485-1383. Tipsters wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.

First of all. Set-tripping doesn't solve the problem, it perpetuates it. Julio was not a gangbanger. I had college courses with Julio, I spent time with Julio at the library, discussing politics, "the streets", just life in general. Julio has experienced a lot in his short life, and he wanted to HEAL his community. He believed in people of color coming together for a bigger purpose. All this gang s**t doesn't uplift our people at all. Blacks and Latinos need to stop shooting each other, and band together against the ultimate oppressor(s). Don't you see white folks laughing at us? How stupid we must look, taking out a genocide on our OWN people! This s**t is ridiculous. Julio taught me that hearts can heal! Julio taught me that we need to stop replicating our abuse; stop hating the people who look like us and are going through the same problems every person of color is going through. Two wrongs don't make a right, and "an eye for an eye" leaves the whole world blind. Killing each other only sets us back further and further each time. RIP Julio, you were truly an amazing being on this earth, and I'm lucky to have crossed paths with you. <3

@Syscom3 - This time around everything you are saying makes no sense. You are completely wrong. Julio was and will always be a voice for the voiceless. How is it that no one cares? When the university he went to is going to have a ceremony in his honor? Young boys now a days are being killed just because of the area they grew up in, in this case he was in the street where he was born and raised! There was no need for these boys to watch their back.

People stating that his brother-in law sent someone to kill him how stupid is that- because of family issues that had occurred his family believes that he might have sent someone to kill him- that's insane. At the end of the day his Sister and her Son are the ones being affected the most. Nobody understands or thinks about her pain. His nephew lost his Uncle but at the end of the day lost his Father as well because now everyone believes his father had something to do with Julios death. I know Julio from school and I know his family pretty well. It is very sad that this occurred, 2 families are being affected Julios family and his Sisters Family. At the end of the day the little baby is being affected the most. We live in a society that is quick to blame and that has got to stop. You all need to stop for a second and really understand that this time around someones life was taken- but what can we all do to make things better for a family that is being broken apart little by little. my heart goes out to Gardo (Julios brother), and his family for everything that is happening.

How is it that there isn't a lesson to be learned here? There are 2 ways to look at it, if he was a gangster then you live by the sword... if he wasn't a gangster as some of his friends are claiming, he was either hanging around with them or in an area that's infested by them.

The two that survived have been given another chance to avoid this website. You don't see a lesson here? To me, that's mind-boggling. If it were me, I would do everything in my power to avoid the whole, wolf-ticket-cheese-toast caper that Piru is spitting.

But I really don't know much because I've never pulled a gun on anyone, struck fear in anyone, represented asphalt that doesn't belong to me nor hung around anyone who does. However, I'm not completely void of the option as I've had several chances to do so but chose otherwise.

The lesson here is "C-H-O-I-C-E"

I got a wolf, man. A pet wolf. His name is Blue. Every morning when I wake up, I smack that wolf and feed him cheese. He don't eat it. I try toast, nothing. I even tried to sell him tickets. Nothin.

But I never even thought to put it all together!!! If I put cheese on the toast, then sell him the tickets, according to Piru, he'll devour the toasty snack!!!

I'll give it a shot, 'cuz the streets don't lie! But, it doesn't say anything in the instructions about not smacking him. Not sure I could stop doing that.

So to recap... I'll wake up, put cheese on the toast, give ole Blue a sharp smack across his chops then sell him a couple tickets, and film the results!!! This is money! Wait, what kind of tickets? I know! I'll sell him plane tickets to Alaska, because I'm big on irony.

you sad uncompasstionate people sooo what this family is greiveing for their loved ones what do you know about loss you all dont know anything i see the post of people such as yourselves having no life and posting comments on how they deserved what they got stop lying. did my brother deserve what he got when a gang members killed him?? my brother passed away because some jerk descided to pick up a gun and take his life because he felt macho if it were up to me if you got enough balls to take a life you better be dammed some one is gonna take yours. its not our job to take lives we were give life for a reason who are we to be the judgers and executers in the end those who are killers will meet their makers one day and the ones who judge are just as bad my heart goes out to this family.. the wounds will heal in time just pray that they catch who ever was responsible for this
