A story for every victim

Julio Portillo, 18

Julio Portillo, an 18-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Thursday, Nov. 25, in the 4300 block of South Main Street in Historic South-Central, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Authorities received a 911 call reporting a shooting victim about 1:10 a.m., said LAPD Newton Det. Tom Brown, who is handling the investigation.

Police arrived and Portillo was taken to California Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:20 a.m. According to coroner's records, he was shot in the head.

During the investigation, detectives learned Portillo was at a small party at an apartment complex when he was assaulted. No one else was injured, Brown said.

The same day of the shooting, Alexander Lopez, an 18-year-old Latino, was arrested in connection with Portillo's death. He has since been charged with murder and is being held in lieu of $1-million bail.

The incident is believed to be gang-related, Brown said.
