A story for every victim

Justin Dunlap, 24

Justin Dunlap, a 24-year-old black man, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, after being assaulted in the 14200 block of Huston Street in Sherman Oaks, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Officers responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon about 6:10 p.m., said LAPD Van Nuys homicide Det. R. Bub, who is handling the case.

When authorities arrived they saw three people fleeing the area, Bub said, but they were arrested.

Dunlap was found with blunt-force trauma to the head. Coroner's records show he was taken by paramedics to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:10 p.m.

Det. Bub said two people were charged with murder in connection with the victim's death: Bryan Figueroa, an 18-year-old Latino, and a juvenile.

The third person apprehended at the scene has not been charged, Bub said.

During the investigation, detectives learned Dunlap and the two assailants were in the park when they had a dispute and attacked the victim.

The incident is not believed to be gang-related, Bub said.

Anyone with additional details about the death of Justin Dunlap is asked to contact Det. Bub at (818) 374-0040. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
