A story for every victim

Keenan Handy, 20 [Updated]

Keenan Handy, a 20-year-old black man, died Friday, Jan. 7, a day after he was shot in the 1300 block of South Long Beach Boulevard in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office, said Handy was driving a car Jan. 6 about 10:14 p.m.

"That's when the car-to-car shooting occurred," Winter said.

Handy was taken to a hospital in Lynwood, where he died the next day at 2:15 p.m.

The shooting was gang-related, Winter said.

The Times has contacted investigators to obtain more information about the case and will provide additional details as soon as possible.

[Update Jan. 18: Sheriff homicide Det. Philip Guzman, who is handling the case, said investigators do not have a description of the assailant or the car.

Although Handy was not a gang member, Guzman said, he could have been mistaken for a member of the Southside gang and that may be why he was shot.

Anyone with information about the incident or the identity of the shooter is asked to contact Det. Guzman at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (800-222-8477).]
