Keion Jeffrey Coleman, 18

Keion Jeffrey Coleman, an 18-year-old black man, was shot and killed Wednesday, Jan. 21 in the 6700 block of South Denker Avenue in Hyde Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 4:45 p.m., Coleman and his two brothers were driving south on South Denker Avenue and West 68th Street when a light-colored SUV pulled beside them and a person inside opened fire, said LAPD Det. Chris Barling. The driver was shot and crashed his blue Kia into a fire hydrant, sending water spewing into the air.

Coleman was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:08 p.m., said Ed Winter, assistant chief of investigations for the coroner’s office.

The driver was also shot and taken to a hospital, where he was in critical condition. He was expected to survive.

Video footage of the moments after the shooting showed two people trying to pull Coleman out of the car. Witnesses told police that a man and a woman were riding in the SUV, which fled south on South Denker Avenue.

Anyone with information is asked to call the LAPD’s Criminal Gang Homicide Division at (213) 485-4341.  Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
