Ladislao Chavez, 52, a Latino male, died when he was shot in the head as he was riding a bicycle in the 11000 block of South Vermont Avenue in Los Angeles shortly after 12:35 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15.

Police said the gunman was a black man who fled in a green Mercury.

hey pops,i feel like this place is the only place that i can talk to u.. i just want to tell u that the date that u left us comming up, and i dont know what to think just like last year, didnt know how to feel about ur day of death or birthday....im lost pops...im sorry for not calling u that day, that will stay with me till the day i can see u and tell u sorry..u wanted me to call u and i put off for the next day,how wrong was i... thinking that u were going to b there... that kills me a bit at a time every day. please help me dad,u are my guied.. i was trong at ur funeral just like u told me, now thats been over, now what? I try to help everybody i can just like u, but who helps me, u were the one who kept me in line, now im lost within my self. i hope u can find a way to pick me up, bcuz i feel im going straight down....i will always remember u and love u till the day i die...ur son ladislao jr.(pilu).....

To mrs. smith first of all i want to say that i take great offence to the comment that u posted of my father. for one he did not "live by sword so he did not die by the sword... my father was a man of friendships a man that demanded respect because that was what he gave a man that would take his shirt off to give it to the next man, if u knew my father u would know this mrs.smith. that life of a gangster ur talking about was behind him more than 20yrs before his death..we all know that my fathers death was a random act of violence, something that can happend to anyone that lives in those types of invironments... my father wasn't a big time cholo as u put it, he did not "live by the sword so he did not die by the sword so dont make it seem like his death was justified by it".. i know that saying "live by the sword die by the sword" sounds good and looks even better, but i wish u can be more carefull and considerate about what u post even more if that person is deceased..
i feel extreamly sorry having to respond to your post in this maner, i have to do this since my father cant speak for him self.
mrs.smith u have offended chavez's family, and i hope that u can understand where his family is coming from..
we will always have a great pain in our hearts because of the way we lost our father, but knowing that one day we will see him again... on behalf of LADISLAO GARCIA CHAVEZ'S family...thank you for understanding...
