Long Beach woman pleads no contest to killing her boyfriend

A Long Beach woman pleaded no contest Feb. 14 to stabbing her boyfriend nearly two years ago, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

In court, Yvonne Marie Pina, 34, pleaded to one count of voluntary manslaughter for killing her boyfriend, Aaron Paolo Flores, 21. She also admitted to the allegation that she used a knife to commit the crime.

Prosecutors said the couple had been fighting for several days prior to March 1, 2016, when Pina fatally stabbed Flores.

On the day of the killing, Flores tried to leave in Pina’s car after a fight, but he was unable to drive away, prosecutors said. Flores then went to a neighbor’s house to use the phone.

Meanwhile, Pina grabbed a knife from her home and approached Flores, saying “You want to hit me,” according to prosecutors. She then stabbed Flores once in the chest.

Prosecutors said Flores responded to Pina, “Look at me. What did you do to me?”

Pina tried to help Flores by driving him to the hospital, where he later died, prosecutors said. Long Beach police arrived shortly after and arrested Pina.

Pina is scheduled to return to court March 21 for sentencing; she faces seven years in state prison.
