A story for every victim

Lorraine Gonzalez, 55

Lorraine Gonzalez, a 55-year-old Latina, was shot and killed in her home Wednesday, Sept. 16, in the 4100 block of Willimet in Atwater Village, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Paramedics and Los Angeles police officers went to Gonzalez’s home about 12:20 p.m. after receiving reports about gunshots in the area, The Times reported

An officer flying in a helicopter over the house spotted a man with a rifle, later identified as Gonzalez’s nephew, Carlos Joseph Wilhelm, and warned officers on the ground, who eventually shot Wilhelm.

Wilhelm, a 39-year-old Latino, was taken to the hospital, according to coroner’s records. The Times reported that he was pronounced dead around midnight.

Gonzalez was found inside the house with gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:45 p.m.

The Los Feliz Ledger quoted neighbors as saying that Wilhelm had lived in the house with Gonzalez and her elderly parents, but he had been evicted earlier that day.

Neighbors said Gonzalez, who was deaf and mute, was funny and personable and was active in the deaf community, according to the Los Feliz Ledger.
