A story for every victim

Mabel Castillo, 25

Mabel Castillo, a 25-year-old Latina, was shot to death Saturday, Jan. 7, in the 600 block of South Evergreen Avenue in Boyle Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m., Castillo, her boyfriend and her 4-year-old daughter drove to her ex-boyfriend’s home, said Los Angeles Police Det. Jose Ramirez.

Castillo and her daughter went into the ex-boyfriend’s apartment where Castillo and the man got into an argument over custody arrangements, Ramirez said.

Castillo and her daughter left the apartment, and as they were driving away, the ex-boyfriend came out of the apartment with a gun, chased them down the street and fired several shots, Ramirez said.

Castillo’s current boyfriend was wounded in the arm, and Castillo was wounded in the chest. The woman’s daughter was not injured.

Castillo was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 5:50 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Jonathan Andrew Arteaga, a 30-year-old Latino, was arrested on suspicion of murder on Jan. 11 in the Van Nuys area, Ramirez said.

Arteaga has been charged with one count each of murder, assault with a semiautomatic weapon and child abuse, according to a spokesman for the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Arteaga is due in court Feb. 6 for an arraignment.

Anyone with information is asked to call Ramirez at (323) 342-8964. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
