Jarrod Atkins, a 29-year-old black man, was shot and killed Sunday, March 6, in the 2200 block of East 105th Street in Watts, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

[Updated March 17, 3:45 p.m.: An earlier version of this post, based on preliminary information from the coroner's office, listed the victim as an unidentified black male in his 20s. Also, at the time, the coroner's office did not have an incident address.]

Atkins and a 34-year-old woman were seated inside a parked vehicle about 11:40 p.m. when an unknown gunman approached the two from the sidewalk, according to an Los Angeles Police Department news release.

The assailant fired a gun several times inside the car striking Atkins and the woman. Atkins was seated in the front passenger seat and the woman in the driver’s seat.

The gunman then left the area in an unknown direction, officials said.

Atkins was pronounced dead at the scene. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics took the woman to a local hospital where she was listed in extremely critical condition.

Authorities said there is no description of the assailant. Investigators are still trying to determine the motive for the shooting.
