A story for every victim

Jose Vera-Eugenio, 21 [Updated]

Jose Vera-Eugenio, a 21-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Monday, Jan. 17, in the 500 block of West 98th Street in Vermont Vista, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

[For the record: An earlier version of this post, which was based on the original report, identified Vera-Eugenio as a Latino in his 20s.]

Vera-Eugenio was seated in a car with two other people about 9:15 p.m. when at least one person walked up and fired at the car, said LAPD Criminal Gang & Homicide Det. Scott Smith. All three occupants were hit.

Authorities were called and Vera-Eugenio was pronounced dead at the scene. According to coroner's records, he was shot several times in the head.

The two other victims were taken to a hospital where they are being treated for their wounds.

Two men were arrested in connection with the shooting, Smith said, but he declined to provide their names citing the ongoing investigation. They have yet to be charged.

The alleged shooters are gang members, and the shooting is believed to be gang-related, he said.
