Red Line stabbing suspect due in court Friday
Angelo Correa, a 24-year-old black man, is due in court Friday in connection with the Jan. 13 fatal stabbing of a Red Line train passenger, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
Correa, who lives in North Hollywood, is scheduled to be arraigned on one count of murder with a special allegation that he used a folding knife to kill Jose Edgaro Velazco-Alvarado, a 34-year-old Latino, prosecutors said.
Correa was arrested on suspicion of murder Jan. 17 after investigators served a search warrant at his home. He was charged Jan. 21.
Correa allegedly got into a verbal dispute with Velazco-Alvarado while the train was stopped at the Vermont station.
According to authorities, Correa walked away and then turned around, walked back and fatally stabbed Velazco-Alvarado.
Correa is being held on $1-million bail and an immigration hold. Correa, who is originally from Portugal, was admitted to the United States as a lawful permanent resident in 1999, said Virginia Kice, a spokeswoman with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
At the time of Correa’s arrest, he was facing deportation proceedings with immigration officials based on a previous criminal history, Kice said in an email.
