Shooting victim who collapsed in East Los Angeles hospital was shot in his car, investigators say

Investigators have determined the location where an East Los Angeles man  was shot before he walked into a hospital emergency room and died on Sunday, May 8.

Marco Antonio Ramos, a 25-year-old Latino, was shot in the 4700 block of Verona Street in East Los Angeles about 2 a.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Eddie Hernandez.

Ramos had just parked on the street in the residential area when another car pulled up to his car, Hernandez said. A passenger in the front seat of the car fired several times at Ramos before the car drove away, Hernandez said.

A passenger in Ramos' car was uninjured.

Investigators initially understood that Ramos was dropped off at the hospital and walked into the emergency room by himself, but those reports were incorrect, Hernandez said.

Ramos' passenger drove him to Los Angeles Community Hospital, about 1.3 miles away, Hernandez said. Ramos collapsed outside the hospital, Hernandez said, but the woman helped him walk inside and medical staff took him to the emergency room, where he collapsed again and died.

Residents around Verona Street reported gunfire about 2 a.m., but deputies were unable to find any evidence of a shooting when they went to the neighborhood, Hernandez said. It was only after they received a call from the hospital that they were able to put the two incidents together.

Ramos arrived at the hospital about 2:20 a.m., Hernandez said. He was pronounced dead at 2:41 a.m., according to coroner's records.

Investigators don't have a description of the shooter's car or the gunman, Hernandez said. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
