A story for every victim

Mark Alexander Aguirre, 21

Mark Alexander Aguirre, a 21-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Oct. 9, 2005, in the 15000 block of Osborne Street in North Hills, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 2 a.m., Los Angeles police responded to a call of shots fired at a house party, according to a news release.

Upon arriving, officers found Aguirre lying in the street at Gloria Avenue and Osborne Street, the release said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:17 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Witnesses told officers that the house party spilled into the street and that several fights broke out, according to the release. During the brawl, a gunman, later identified as Oscar Humberto Arenales, shot at Aguirre several times, the release said. Arenales was 19 at the time of the killing.

After a preliminary investigation, detectives got a description of Arenales’ vehicle and, minutes later, a patrol car saw a similar car on Nordhoff Street, the release said. Officers followed for a short time before Arenales surrendered to police and was arrested on suspicion of murder.

On Sept. 12, 2006, Arenales pleaded no contest to three charges: voluntary manslaughter, a felon with a firearm, and firing at an inhabited dwelling, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. A month later, he was sentenced to 16 years to life in state prison.
