A story for every victim

Mark Anthony Mendez, 44

Mark Mendez, a 44-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Friday, Oct. 29, in the 1200 block of Atlantic Boulevard in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Authorities received a 911 call reporting a gunshot victim about 9:10 p.m., said sheriff's homicide Det. Dave Gunner, who is handling the case.

Deputies arrived and found Mendez with several gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital where he died at 10:53 p.m., Gunner said.

Witnesses to the shooting said Mendez was standing outside when a silver minivan drove up, a person got out and shot him. The shooter was described as a Latino in his 20s.

The shooting appears to be gang-related, Gunner said, although Mendez was not a documented gang member.

Anyone with information about the shooting or the identity of the shooter is asked to contact Det. Gunner at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
