Martin Mendiola, 18

Martin Mendiola, an 18-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Friday, May 27, in the 300 block of West Raymond Street in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records. 

Mendiola was hanging out with a friend outside the friend's home about 10:50 p.m., when a man approached them on foot, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Eddie Hernandez. After a brief conversation the man pulled out a gun and shot both men multiple times, Hernandez said. 

Mendiola was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:53 p.m., according to coroner's records. His friend was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition and survived, Hernandez said. 

The gunman was last seen running west from the scene on Raymond Street, Hernandez said. He was described only as an adult Latino. 

Mendiola lived in Compton, just a few blocks from where he died, Hernandez said.
