Maurice Raymone McKinzy (2017-02-01)

Maurice McKinzy, a 45-year-old black man, was shot and killed Wednesday, Feb. 1, in the 7500 block of South Main Street in Florence, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 10:30 p.m., McKinzy had just finished visiting friends in the area and was walking to his car when he was approached by at least one person, said Los Angeles Police Det. Eric Crosson.

The person opened fire, striking McKinzy, Crosson said.

McKinzy was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:54 p.m, according to coroner’s records.

Police believe the shooter was accompanied by other people, but at this point it looks like only one person opened fire.

Detectives are still trying to determine a motive for the shooting. McKinzy was not a gang member, Crosson said.

KTLA-TV reported that McKinzy was a traffic officer at LAX. His family has set up a GoFundMe page, calling McKinzy a father to a son and daughter.
