Maurice Phillip Ross, 24

Maurice Phillip Ross, a 24-year-old black male, was fatally shot on Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the 200 block of East Anaheim Street in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

According to witnesses, Ross was involved in a physical fight with three adult black males just before he was shot around 10:45 p.m., according to a Long Beach Police Department news release. 

First responders found Ross lying on the sidewalk on East Anaheim Street, near Locust Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 11 p.m., according to coroner's records. 

A female adult bystander who was not connected with the suspects or Ross was also struck by gunfire, according to the release. She was taken to a nearby hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the lower torso.

Ross lived in Bellflower, according to coroner's records.  

The suspects were last seen driving in a dark-colored four-door SUV, according to the release. Investigators are trying to find surveillance video from nearby businesses to identify the men involved in the fight. They don't have a motive for the shooting.
