Melissa Lopez, a 22-year-old white woman, was shot and killed Thursday, April 5, in the 4100 block of Workman Mill Road in North Whittier, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Lopez and a man were found shot early Thursday at an apartment complex, said Lt. Robert Smith of the Sheriff's Department.

Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene, and the man, whose name was unavailable, was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, where he is expected to survive, said Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter.

Coroner's records show the woman died from gunshot wounds to the head.

Smith described the crime scene as “large” and complicated as deputies processed blood evidence and shell casings while residents of the gated complex were attempting to go to work.

No arrests have been made.
