Michael Davis, a 21-year-old black man, was shot and killed Saturday, April 28, in the 8400 block of South Figueroa Street in Vermont Knolls, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Davis was in a motel room about 2 a.m. when three unknown men burst in and assaulted the victim, according to an LAPD news release.

At some point, one of the assailants shot Davis in the torso and then all three suspects fled the room, police said.

A motel employee was notified about the shooting and called authorities. Paramedics arrived and Davis was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:53 a.m.

Investigators believe the shooting was gang-related. The assailants were described as male blacks in their late teens to early 20s.

Mai.. I am so sorry for your loss, you write so beautifully from your heart and it shows. I am in Australia, just reading these pages.. we do not have guns here .. few gangs.. although we do have our violence problems like many places.. i am so so sorry for you and others who's lives were cut short.. Michael seemed like just a regular guy caught in difficult circumstances.. maybe he made so poor decisions but in the end he obviously was much loved and thus gave love.. and love is king on this planet not some gang.. i love you Mai .. and Michael rest in peace.. from someone who never met you or knew you .. infact i've never been to America in my life but like others have grown up watching the ghetto and gang horror show unfold... where there is hope there is light Mai.. ...My sweet Mikey...although I wasn't his biological mother, he spent many nights at my house, shared meals, laughter and tears with me and my family...Mikey was a truly good person, a handsome young man with a shy persona...He always had a ready smile and was so polite and respectful to me, I will always remember those gorgeous deep waves in his hair and how I use to tease him and say "you got them waves for the babes" ...he would laugh and blush in the sweetest way...He called me "Moms" and would give me warm hugs....I always had so much hope for this young man because he wasn't vicious or cruel...he didn't have that "angry black dude" vibe at all, just a really good heart...although he was raised in south central and may have sometimes kept company with questionable individuals, he was a good person and was trying to get thru life as best he could, he was a mothers son, a sisters brother, an uncle and a friend to many and he didn't deserve to die in such a horrible way and over such trivial matters...He was better than what life gave him and it really hurts that he wasn't able to live on beyond the sometimes harsh ugliness of urban life, his chances to flourish and have a positive future were stolen from him in a truly cowardly manner...jealousy, hatred and ignorance of self are factors in so many of these senseless killings...I pray that wherever Mikey goes in his Life after this one, that he will be happy and free...This ghetto life is taking so many of our young brothers and sisters, I pray that their lives and deaths won't be in vain and that they serve a higher purpose....I luv u Mikey and I will miss your beautiful brown face and infectious laugh...You were one of my favorite "play sons" and one of my sons closest friends... your passing has taken some of his glow away....I will continue to pray for your family as I know the loss of another son not very long ago has been difficult on them, and now with you gone, life just seems a little less bright....Blessings to one and all who have lost a loved one to violence, may your sadness recede more with each passing day to be replaced with the joy of having known and loved the departed.
