Michael Javier Echevrria, 20

Michael Echevrria, a 20-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Saturday, April 3, in the 3500 block of Whiteside Street in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Det. Marcelo Quintero of the sheriff's homicide bureau said Echevrria was walking on the street about 7:50 p.m. when he was confronted by several people in a vehicle. A person inside the car asked Echevrria his gang affiliation and then shot him in the upper body, Quintero said.

Echevrria was taken to County USC Hospital, where he died at 8:30 p.m., according to coroner's records.

The victim was not a gang member, Quintero said.

Investigators were still gathering information about the assailants and the type of car they were driving.
