Michael Yonko, a 46-year-old white man, died Thursday, Jan. 19, a week after he was beaten near West Sixth Street and South Vermont Avenue in Koreatown, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 12, Yonko was sitting in a chair in a parking lot when a person described as a black man with bulky clothing walked up behind him and assaulted him with a baseball bat, said Los Angeles Police Det. John Lamberti.

Yonko was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:09 a.m. on Jan. 19, according to coroner’s records.

Yonko was a homeless man who frequented the area, Lamberti said.
