A story for every victim

Michele Damato, 19

Michele Damato, a 19-year-old Latino, was fatally wounded Saturday, June 8, in the 10700 block of South Compton Avenue in Willowbrook, according to L.A. County coroner’s records.

Damato was standing near a bus stop about 8:47 p.m., when a gunman approached him and fired multiple shots, said LAPD Det. Sal LaBarbera.

Damato, who was wounded in the upper torso, ran a short distance and collapsed on the sidewalk, LaBarbera said.

He was taken to a local hospital, where he died at 11:11 p.m., coroner’s records show.

LaBarbera said the shooting appears to be related to several that occurred around that time and could be due to gang conflict in the area.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Criminal Gang Homicide unit at (213) 485-1383. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
