A story for every victim

Miguel De Jesus Castro, 20

Miguel De Jesus Castro, a 20-year-old Latino, died Monday, Sept. 26, after he was shot in the 13500 block of Lakeland Road in South Whittier, according to Orange County coroner’s records.

The evening before he died, Castro was visiting a friend who lived on Lakeland Road, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.

Around 10:50 p.m. the two young men began to argue, Mendoza said. The friend allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Castro in driveway in front of his residence.

Castro was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange and pronounced dead the following day at 3:23 a.m., according to coroner’s records. The cause was listed as a gunshot wound.

Castro’s friend, Jorge Nicolas Arellano Lopez, 23, was arrested that evening, Mendoza said. Lopez was charged with murder and assault with a semiautomatic firearm on Sept. 28 and pleaded not guilty to both charges, according to Los Angeles County Superior Court records.

Lopez’s next court date is Nov. 15 at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in downtown Los Angeles.
