Monticello Murrell Stephens, 50

Monticello Murrell Stephens, a 50-year-old black man, was shot and killed Saturday, March 7, in the 5300 block of Van Ness Boulevard in Hyde Park, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

About 1:22 a.m., Stephens was working on a blue Dodge pickup truck when he was shot, said Los Angeles Police Det. Dave Garrido. 

While Stephens was under the truck, three people walked up to him and one person began shooting at him, police said. 

The assailants then fled on foot, police said. Stephens was discovered hours later by a passerby who called authorities. 

Stephens was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said he did not have gang ties.
