A story for every victim

Mykel Washington, 24

Mykel Washington, a 24-year-old black man, was shot and killed Wednesday, June 10, near the 8800 block of South Vermont Avenue in Westmont, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly after 12:30 p.m., deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call of several gunshot victims.

Deputies arrived to find four people with gunshot wounds, according to a news release from the department.

Investigators determined that Washington had just stepped out of a nearby liquor store and was walking back to a dark-colored sedan with three others inside when another vehicle pulled up, said Sgt. Steve Rubino with the Sheriff’s Department.

A man got out of the second sedan and opened fire, striking Washington and three others, including a woman standing on the sidewalk, Rubino said.

Washington was pronounced dead at the scene at  12:44 p.m., according to coroner’s records. The others who were injured are expected to survive.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
