A story for every victim

Oscar Becerril-Rios, 31

Oscar Becerril-Rios, a 31-year-old Latino, died from blunt-force injuries Tuesday, Jan. 12, two days after he was hit over the head with a 2-by-4 at 17th Street and Hooper Avenue in downtown Los Angeles, authorities said.

Los Angeles Police Det. Kelle Baitx said Becerril-Rios was attending a baptismal party Sunday, Jan. 10, when a confrontation began. The altercation escalated and moved outside, then someone hit Becerril-Rios over the head with the board, he said.

Becerril-Rios was struck about 1 a.m. and taken to a hospital, where he died two days later at 6:30 a.m.

Baitx said the suspect is a Latino man who probably did not know the victim. He said he did not know what the fight was about, but described the altercation as a "beer-fueled dispute." The suspect is still at-large.

Anyone with information about this killing is asked to call the LAPD tip line at (877) LAWFULL. Anonymous tips are welcome.
