Oscar Lazo (2015-06-23)

Oscar Lazo, a 23-year-old Latino, was fatally assaulted Tuesday, June 23, near Rockwood Street and North Union Avenue in Westlake, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 10 p.m., Lazo was outside a liquor store near Beverly Boulevard and North Union Avenue when three Latinos approached him and began to attack him, said LAPD Det. John Motto. Lazo, who tried to run away, was chased and assaulted about a block away, where he collapsed, Motto said.

Police are reviewing surveillance video in hopes of narrowing down suspect information. The entire attack lasted about three minutes, and police are still trying to determine what Lazo was beaten with, Motto said. The suspects fled on foot.

“There’s all kinds of people around and they don’t do anything to anybody but him,” Motto said of the attack. “It’s personal in some way or another.”

Motto said that Lazo lived in the area with family and was in and out of the liquor store several times in the moments preceding the attack.

Anyone with information is asked to call LAPD’s Rampart homicide detectives at (213) 484-3639. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
