A 37-year-old man was sentenced April 17, 2013, to state prison for a 2004 slaying in Exposition Park, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
Sergio Giovanny Ruano pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced immediately to 11 years in prison for the beating death of Jorge Candia Gonzalez.
Gonzalez, 25, was fatally injured in a confrontation in the 1200 block of West 39th Street in Exposition Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
According to the deputy district attorney, Ruano and Gonzalez got into an altercation in the early morning hours of April 25, 2004. Several witnesses said that Gonzalez used a bat to shatter the windshield of Ruano’s car.
Ruano then retrieved a metal pipe from his vehicle and struck Gonzalez several times in the head.
Gonzalez was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:30 a.m.
Ruano was arrested in Guatemala in May 2011 and extradited to Los Angeles by the FBI on March 30, 2012.
