A story for every victim

Patricia Elizabeth Alfaro, 17

Patricia Alfaro, a 17-year-old Latina, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, six days after she was shot near South Vermont Avenue and West Manchester Avenue in Vermont Knolls, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3, Alfaro was in a vehicle with at least one other person traveling south on South Vermont Avenue when they became involved in an argument with a person driving a dark-colored four-door sedan, according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department.

As the vehicles continued south on South Vermont Avenue, a third vehicle, described as a light-colored SUV, fired multiple rounds into the vehicle Alfaro was in.

Alfaro and a 24-year-old man were struck by gunfire. In an effort to get away from the gunman, the two drove to the 700 block of West 77th Street and called 911.

Alfaro and the man were taken to a hospital. Alfaro was pronounced dead at 4:15 p.m. on Sept. 9, said Ed Winter, assistant chief of investigations for the coroner’s office.

The 24-year-old was treated and released. Police said they are looking for black men in their late teens to early 20s.
