Patrick Oliver Cunningham, 39

Patrick Oliver Cunningham, a 39-year-old black man, was shot and killed on Monday, July 6, in the 17000 block of Vermont Avenue in Gardena, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records. 

Gardena police officers received a call at 3:36 p.m. about a male gunshot victim lying in front of 17033 S. Vermont Ave., according to a department news release. When they arrived, officers found one gunshot victim who was conscious and then discovered another gunshot victim, later identified as Cunningham. 

Coroner's records said the two men had been arguing and exchanged gunfire. 

Both men were taken to Harbor UCLA Medical Center, where Cunningham was pronounced dead at 4:48 p.m., according to coroner's records.  

The first gunshot victim went into surgery and survived, said Gardena Detective Bureau Commander Lt. Russ Temple. "This is a complicated case, and as yet, we have had no arrests."
