Pedro Cadenas, 33

Pedro Cadenas, a 33-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Tuesday, July 24, in a shopping mall in the 1400 block of Van Nuys Boulevard in Arleta, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

[Correction: An earlier version of this post, based on information from the coroner’s office, incorrectly listed the neighborhood as Panorama City. LAPD officials said the shooting occurred in Arleta.]

Police arrested Gerardo Romero Lopez, a 25-year-old Latino, on suspicion of murder 12 hours after Cardenas was killed. Lopez had been on parole for robbery, but that had recently ended.

“The detectives worked through the night combing over key evidence that linked Lopez to the shooting,” Lt. Paul Vernon said in an LAPD news release. “Turns out, Lopez lived just a couple blocks down the street from the crime scene.”

Investigators are still looking for another man and woman that were present at the time of the shooting. The male suspect is described as a Latino in his 30s, and was wearing a small fedora hat.

No other details of the shooting are available.

Gerardo Lopez in currently being held on no bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles. His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 13 at the North Valley Superior Court.
