A story for every victim

Rammy Sam Jaradat, 26

Rammy Sam Jaradat, a 26-year-old white man, was fatally shot by Los Angeles police Sunday, Feb. 14, in the 6900 block of Kester Avenue in Van Nuys, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 1 p.m., LAPD officers responded to reports of a “screaming woman who had been attacked by a man with a knife,” Chief Charlie Beck told police commissioners Feb. 16.

Officers arrived at an apartment and found one person with stab wounds and at least two other people with other injuries, Officer Matthew Ludwig said.

Other officers arrived on the scene and found Jaradat outside the apartment, armed with a knife, Ludwig said. It was unclear what prompted police to open fire.

Jaradat was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:30 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

No officers were injured.  Jaradat was the fourth person shot and killed by LAPD officers this year. On-duty officers shot and killed 21 people in 2015.

Like all shootings by LAPD officers, the deadly encounter will be reviewed by the district attorney's office, Police Commission and its inspector general.
