A story for every victim

Reina Ines Angulo Mercado, 50

Reina Ines Angulo Mercado, a 50-year-old Latina, died Friday, June 29, after she was shot in the 1300 block of James M. Wood Boulevard in Westlake, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

About 10 p.m. on June 26, Mercado was standing on a sidewalk with her son and husband who were working on a vehicle when another vehicle drove up and a person inside began shooting, said Los Angeles Police Det. Ray Martinez.

The vehicle continued south on Albany Street and out of view, police said.

Mercado, who was the only one injured, was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead three days later at 3:57 p.m., according to coroner's records.

Police say they believe Mercado was not the intended target of the shooting, which is believed to be related to gang activity.
