A story for every victim

Ricardo Alcarez, 27

Ricardo Alcarez, a 27-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Saturday, April 10, in the 700 block of North Burris Avenue in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Deputies from the Compton station got a call reporting gunfire and a shooting victim about 5:30 p.m., according to a news release from the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.

When deputies arrived at the location, they found Alcarez with a gunshot to his upper torso. He was taken to St. Francis Medical Center, where he died at 9:36 p.m., according to coroner's records.

At the time of the shooting, Alcarez was visiting his child's mother, said Det. Q. Rodriguez, who is handling the homicide investigation.

The woman got into a heated argument with her brother, Jose Rene Medrano, a 21-year-old Latino, and Alcarez intervened, Rodriguez said.

During the altercation, the woman threatened to call the police. Authorities said Medrano became enraged, took out a gun and said he was going to kill her. When Alcarez tried to take the gun away, Medrano shot him, Rodriguez said.

After the shooting, Medrano fled on foot, but was found several blocks away. He was taken to the Compton station and arrested on suspicion of murder.

Medrano is scheduled to be charged in court April 13.
