A story for every victim

Rodney Sherin Johnson, 48

Rodney Sherin Johnson, a 48-year-old black man, was shot and killed on Thursday, March 30, in the 400 block of North Wilmington Avenue in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Johnson had an address in Gardena, but he had been living in his van in the residential area of Compton where he died, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Troy Ewing said.

Johnson had been talking with a friend at West Brazil Street and North Wilmington Avenue near where he parked his van. At 7:49 p.m., as he was returning from his visit, a man ran up and shot him several times, Ewing said.

Deputies found Johnson lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds, Ewing said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

The shooter was described only as a black man, who was last seen running away. Ewing said there was no conversation between the gunman and Johnson, and investigators don’t have a motive for the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
