A story for every victim

Ruben Martinez Barrera, 18

Ruben Martinez Barrera, an 18-year-old white man, died from a gunshot wound early on Saturday, June 6, in the 5400 block of Elm Avenue in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Long Beach police were called to the scene about 11:55 p.m. Friday, June 5, according to a news release from the department. Officers discovered Barrera lying on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds in his upper body.

Barrera was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:13 a.m., according to coroner's records. Residents of the area reported hearing a "scuffle" outside and discovered the victim outside, according to the coroner's office.

The victim was a resident of Long Beach, but Long Beach police investigators won't comment on whether he lived in the neighborhood because it might jeopardize the investigation, said Nancy Pratt, a police spokeswoman.

Pratt said the incident is being investigated as possibly gang-related, but investigators said it appears unrelated to another possibly gang-related shooting that happened about two hours earlier on June 5 at East 17th Street and Alamitos Avenue in Long Beach. That shooting killed Anthony Holston III, a 20-year-old black man from Long Beach.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call Long Beach police homicide Dets. Teryl Hubert and Michael Hubbard at (562) 570-7244. Those who wish to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
