A story for every victim

Ryan Devaughn Joseph, 20

Ryan Devaughn Joseph, a 20-year-old black man, was fatally shot by Los Angeles police on Sunday, Dec. 18, in the 6000 block of South Western Avenue in Harvard Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 8:25 p.m., officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's Metro Division observed a man who held his hands near his waistband and who was believed to be carrying a weapon, said Lt. Chris Ramirez with the LAPD.

When officers approached, the man — later identified as Joseph by the coroner's office — fled and ran through an apartment building before turning north on Western toward 60th Street.

At that point, at least one officer opened fire, striking Joseph, Ramirez said.

Joseph was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said it was not clear what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting. Ramirez said a handgun was recovered at the scene. No officers were injured in the incident. The officers involved were not wearing body cameras.
