A story for every victim

Ryan Dejuan Dunbar, 17

Ryan Dunbar, a 17-year-old black man, was shot and killed Saturday, Aug. 25, near 43rd Street and Arlington Avenue in Leimert Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

The shooting occurred about 1 a.m., said LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman.

Dunbar was with some friends when he was confronted by a pair of suspects, she said.

“The suspect began an argument prior to producing a handgun and demanding the victim’s property,” Eisenman said. “One suspect shot the victim in the upper torso.”

Dunbar was taken to California Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

Eisenman said she did not know whether the shooting was gang-related, but a law enforcement source said the argument involved gang allegiances.

Dunbar had been making insulting remarks about a gang when he was confronted by two suspects, including the man who shot him, the source said. The gunman did a “pocket check” of the victim, asking for his property, before opening fire on him.

Anyone with information about the killing is asked to contact the LAPD Criminal Gang-Homicide Division at (213) 485-1383. Tipsters wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
